Understanding What Hosting Is

Hosting refers to the service that is provided to you so your website can be viewed anywhere in the world. Hosting also serves your site with other tools and resources that make your website function the way you want it to work. These services can vary from host to host.

You should know what you want to accomplish through your website and compare that to the hosting plan. Does the hosting plan you are considering contain the software, tools, resource size, and other resources that allow you to achieve your online goals?

Hosting services are provided by means of a server (special computer) that is dedicated for that purpose and connected to the Internet. Such a computer is known as your hosting server, whereas hosting provider and host normally refer to the company that provides the service.

Every host is different, offering different hosting plans and services for your website needs. Be sure to check out several hosts and compare plans and services before you decide to purchase a plan. Does your host or the hosting plan meet your budget constraints? Does it give you the support you need? If not, consider another plan, or host.

The Host's Responsibilities

Your host provides the service that connects your website to the Internet. It is the same as leasing you space on a computer. Your host's responsibility is to make sure the hosting computer, not your computer, is working all of the time, keeping you connected to the server so your website can be viewed by the world.

The host's responsibility stops with the hosting server. Understanding that can prevent a lot of frustration and disappointment.

Some hosts may provide other services as domain registration or transfer, software programs, backup system, web design and etc. If the host provides such services, it is the host's responsibility to ensure these services are supplied to you in good working order. But, it is not their responsibility to install, maintain, setup, change, delete, save or other activities that you would perform by using those services unless the host agrees to do so.

After that, the host's responsibilities stop. Your host doesn't have any thing to do with running your business, maintaining your website, or repairing your broken email. That responsibility is left up to you.

However, good hosts provide ample help so you can solve any problem regarding your hosting services with them.

The Different Types Of Hosting

Types of hosting can be looked at from two view points: the operating systems and server configurations.

Operating Systems are Windows, Unix, and Linux.

Windows servers, of course, run on the Windows operating system and use Internet Information Services to call up and serve Web pages. It is geared more toward commercial usage and therefore tends to be more expensive. Most Web technologies run better on UNIX or Linux.

UNIX is an operating system that was developed by AT&T in order to run servers at large corporations and universities. It too, runs on the expensive side.

Linux is an operating system that was developed from the UNIX system. It is robust and open source (free, keeping hosting cost down) which makes it better for offering lower cost hosting.

Server Configurations are shared, virtually private, dedicated, and cloud hosting. Here is a quick look at how each is configured:

Shared Hosting is when several clients are hosted on the same server and each client competes with the other clients for the server resources. One client with a very large website could get all the resources; the others would have to do without. This tends to be the least expensive hosting.

Virtual Private Hosting is when all the clients are on the same server, but the server is divided into sections and each client has his own section with his own resources. The clients do not have to compete with one another. This hosting is more expensive than shared hosting, but tends to cost less than the remaining two configurations.

Dedicated Servers provide hosting services for only one client. The server and all its resources are dedicated to the only client. This is the most powerful and expensive hosting, but it gives the client more control over the server and its resources.

Cloud Hosting is when several servers are combined to serve a pool of clients. However, since there are several servers joined together, the load on resources is spread if resources get low on one server. If that happens, another one quickly takes over.

Hosting With Inphase

Inphase hosting plans are shared to ensure the most economical plans, using TURBO SSD disk systems, with 24+ CPU cores per server to give Gigabit network speeds with the Lunix operating system.

Server resources are rigidly monitored to ensure all hosting plans are served with the resources that each plan stipulates. Your website will not suffer for lack of hosting resources when you host with Inphase.
