If you find that you need another domain for your business, it may be that you can create one on your original hosting account instead. It will prevent the management and expense of creating another hosting account (every domain needs a hosting account to make it work).
But if you do, remember your new domain will compete with your primary domain for hosting resources. Keeping that in mind, the topics below give the names, descriptions, and procedures for creating and hosting multiple domains on the same account.
You create subdomains by using your Developer’s Panel (cPanel). Your Client Panel manages only your primary domain and if you use it to create a subdomain, it will create an order for another domain and charge you for it. However, you can easily reach your Developer’s Panel from your Client’s Panel by navigating to Services > My Services and selecting the Hosting Plan for the primary domain for which you want to create a subdomain (be sure to select the hosting plan and not the domain itself).
Subdomain: A subdomain is a name that is attached to your main domain. For example, you previously registered the domain name domain1.com which is your primary domain for your hosting account. You find that you need another domain name. You decide to create a sub-domain and form it as domain2.domain1.com. Notice that the sub part goes before the primary name and is separated by a dot.
Some reasons for creating a Subdomain are:
-
Redirect traffic as if it were a different site as employees.doman1.com
-
Extend the function of present site as blog.domain1.com
-
Create memorable URLs for different content areas as cars.domain1.com
-
Create sections for different members as greg.domain1.com
How to create the subdomain name “blog” for primary domain name “domain1”:
-
Logon to your Client’s Panel
-
Navigate to Services > My Services
-
Click the Hosting Account for which domain you want to manage
-
Click Subdomains from the Quick Shortcuts module (opens your Developer’s Panel to Subdomains)
-
Enter your chosen sub-name in the Subdomain box (our example is blog)
-
Ensure the correct primary domain name is showing in the Domain box (our example would be domain1.com)
-
Click in the box for Document Root
-
Ensure the Document Root indicates your subdomain name (our example would be: public_html/blog)
-
Click the Create button
Redirected Domain: Redirects are used to help you direct visitors, users, and search engines to a new location within your present site or to a new website altogether. The Redirect can be permanent or temporary.
Some reasons for creating a Redirect are:
-
You are updating a section and permanently moved the old data to a new location
-
You don’t want search engines to update their present resource location for temporary information or old content
-
You want to point your subdomain to another URL
Here is how to create the Redirect domain for “blog.domain1.com” :
-
Logon to your Client’s Control Panel
-
Navigate to Services > My Services
-
Click the Hosting Plan for the domain you want to redirect
-
Click any icon in the Quick Shortcuts module (this takes you to Email page within your Developer’s Panel)
-
Click the Home link at the top left of the page
-
Scroll down if necessary until you find the Domains module
-
Click the Redirects icon
-
Select the Type of redirect you want
-
Select the domain you want to redirect
-
Indicate the section or page of the site you want to redirect
-
Insert the new URL for the Redirected Domain
-
Select the www.redirection
-
Check if it is a Wild Card Redirect
-
Click the Add button
Parked Domain: A Parked Domain is a top-level or primary domain (it must be registered) that is added to, or parked on, your existing hosting account and automatically points to your primary domain. All traffic to the parked domain is automatically forwarded to the primary domain. Parked domains are also called Aliases.
Some reasons for parking a domain are:
-
You registered domain1.com and to protect it, you also registered domain1.biz, domain1.net, and domain.org. Instead of creating four different hosting accounts, you create one and park the other three on the main domain
-
You want a valued domain name, but are not ready to use it yet. To make sure no one else registers it, you register it and park it on an existing domain until you are ready to use it
-
You have a domain that you are not using, so you park it on another existing account until you are ready to sell it
Here is how to create a Parked Domain or Alias Domain:
-
Logon to your Client’s Control Panel
-
Navigate to Services > My Services
-
Click the Hosting Plan for the parked domain
-
Click any icon in the Quick Shortcuts module (this takes you to Email page within your Developer’s Panel)
-
Click the Home link at the top left of the page
-
Scroll down if necessary until you find the Domains module
-
Click the Aliases icon
-
Enter the domain you want to park (use as an alias)
-
Click the Add Domain button
Add-On Domain: Add-on domains are top-level domains (they must be registered) that point to a subdirectory in your current web hosting account. When you create an addon domain the system automatically creates a subdomain. When someone visits the add-on domain it gives the appearance of a totally separate website.
A good use of an add-on domain would be if a family member wanted their own website, but wanted to avoid creating a different hosting plan.
Here is how to create an Add-On Domain:
-
Logon to your Client’s Control Panel
-
Navigate to Services > My Services
-
Click the Hosting Plan for the parked domain
-
Click any icon in the Quick Shortcuts module (this takes you to Email page within your Developer’s Panel)
-
Click the Home link at the top left of the page
-
Scroll down if necessary until you find the Domains module
-
Click the Addon Domains icon
-
Enter the domain you want to use as an add-on
-
The Subdomain and Document Root text boxes are automatically filled
-
Check the FTP box if you want to create an FTP account
-
Click the Add Domain button
