While some special charters are permissible to use in a domain name, we advise against it unless it really makes sense to do so.

For example, the domain “dogsbestfriend.com” is already registered. So, you decided to use “dogs-best-friend.com.” Which of these domains is best and more easily remembered?

If your clients can’t remember your exact web address, or can’t type it correctly, they can’t make a return visit to your site. 

And, if your customers enter the most easy to remember domain, they will go to your competitor’s website.

Short domain names are better than long domain names. That’s true for easy typing, easy spelling, and easy remembering.

If you have a long business name, try to find a way to shorten it; a way that will still represent your business appropriately, but one that will not cause a burden to type or remember.

Bad associations with other meanings should never be made purposely, but in some instances they are easy to make accidently. Especially when you try to shorten a domain name or use it as an acronymn.

For instance, say your business name is rather long (Publishers United Knowledge Emporium) and to shorten it up, you use the first letters of each word.

Why would anyone want to visit a site with a name like that?

The .com TLD (Top Layer Domain) is still the most popular but it’s hard to find a .com name that’s not already taken. Unless it is an unusually long name.

Newer TLDs have been made available to help the business owner associate the type of work they do with their domain name. As .agency, .business, .company, etc.

Some newer TLDs are a little more expensive, but the extra investment could help you add value to your domain name.

Keywords are the words that potential visitors type in a search bar to help them find the information they are looking for.

The more relevant the keyword is to the search query, the higher the listing on the search results.

It’s a known fact that the more relevant your domain name is to the search query, the better chances it has to be listed.

It improves a potential visitor of finding your services (your SEO results).

Check your splling. Spelling mistakes ruin good information. And good information is what people are searching for.

Too many spelling errors will cause a potential client from taking you seriously, responsible, or caring. If you don’t care how your website content is, why should people be expected to take you seriously about your other business dealings?

TLD competition can be started when a business owner registers a name with a particular TLD and then someone with a simular business registers it with a different TLD. For example, mybusiness.com and mybusiness.org.

This can cause confusion amoung searchers and cause them to go to an entirley different website that offers the same services.

Don’t create confusion for your potential visitors.

As everything else, domain names experience an increse in registration fees from time to time.

And some of the newer TLDs are more expensive depending upon their classification and popularity. But these domain names with their unique TLDs can add value to your business.

What we are talking about is being on guard for excessive charges, not only on the initial registration, but especially on the renewal registration.

Shop around and see what other hosts are charging for a domain like yours.

Check your host or domain registrar and be sure the domain is registred in your, or your company’s, name.

That way, you have full management over it and can take it with you if you were to move to a new host.

Check it two or three times. Make absolutly sure it is the domain you want and that it is spelled correctly.

Once you register a domain, you can’t give it back. It’s yours for the entire length of time you registred it. Even if it is spelled wrong. To get the correct spelling, you will have to register that domain also. That, of course, doubles the cost of your domain.
